The River Severn at Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury in Shrophire is a border town on the banks of the River Severn in its middle course. Periodically the town has to deal with the impacts of flooding caused by increased precipitation in the Welsh mountains and the subsequent over-topping of the Clywedog Dam.

The top left photograph is looking upstream from the Porthill Bridge. Evidence of river bank stabilisation can be seen.

The top right image is looking downstream around the meander bend at The Quarry.

Left - shows the recreational land use of The Quarry where the lower lying land of the park is subjected to river inundation.

This acceptance of land flooding includes from upstream to downstream; Mountfields Playing Fields, Frankwell Car Park, The Quarry and Gay Meadow Football Ground and is a recognised management strategy. Other flood defence techniques can be seen in the next image.
